Domestic Violence Awareness Month !

October is Domestic Violence Awarness Month and there are many events planned including a vigil on October 26 to honor and memorialize victims and survivors of domestic violence.

 

 2011 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH EVENTS

 

Saturday, October 1—Helpmate and N.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence will be sharing a booth at the BLUE RIDGE PRIDE FESTIVAL!  12-6:00p.m. in Pack Square Park

This is a day long outdoor festival including mainstage music and entertainers, community talents, educational workshops, regional vendors, and participation from state-wide and local LGBTQ and non-profit organizations.

October 10-15—Domestic Violence Awareness Week at A-B Tech!

October 10-14:  Silent Witness Exhibit in A-B Tech’s Holly Library

This exhibit is a traveling memorial honoring women and children who were murdered in N.C. as a result of Domestic Violence.

Wednesday, October 12:  Domestic Violence 101 Presentation

This will cover Helpmate’s services to victims/survivors of abuse as well as the basic dynamics of Domestic Violence.  It will be offered to all A-B Tech students and staff.

10:30am-12:00pm in the A-B Tech Ferguson Auditorium

Thursday, October 13:  Wellness Fair

Helpmate will have an information table set up during this college-wide fair which will focus on physical, mental, and financial health.  It is open to all A-B Tech students and staff.

9:00am-3:00pm in the A-B Tech Coman Gym

Saturday, October 15:  N.C.  Society of Radiologic Technologists Seminar

Helpmate is presenting during this seminar and will be focusing on the healthcare community’s response to Domestic Violence.  The presentation will discuss ways for medical professionals to identify abuse and assist survivors in seeking help. 

October 18-19—Red Cross “Donor Days”

Helpmate will be partnering with The Red Cross in a dual effort to create awareness about Domestic Violence and the importance of donating blood.  Helpmate will set up an information table in the local Red Cross Donation Center (100 Edgewood Road) on these dates and will be encouraging Helpmate supporters and staff to donate blood during this time.  To schedule an appointment, please contact Christy Price at 828.254.2968, ext 12 or cprice@helpmateonline.org.

Wednesday, October 26—Vigil to Honor Victims & Survivors of Domestic Violence

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!  Helpmate is collaborating with the YWCA Motherlove Program in order to heighten awareness about the epidemic of abuse and to memorialize those who have lost their lives this year in N.C. as a result of Domestic Violence.  This event will include The Silent Witness Exhibit, a Survivor Testimony, and much more!  It will be held in the YWCA Multi-Purpose Room (185 S. French Broad Ave.) from 5:00-6:30p.m.
