Service Project Helps to Beautify Our Shelter

The Helpmate staff is so thankful to a group of wonderful volunteers who donated their valuable time on a beautiful Saturday morning to assist us with building and grounds work at our emergency shelter.  On May 22, a group of employees from Trane and a local Independent Trane dealer (Mikes Heating and Cooling) assisted with various jobs that included weeding, spreading mulch, clearing brush and minor repairs.  The idea for this service project came from Hugh and Cathy Alexander, who are both Helpmate volunteers.  This amazing couple has contributed many hours toward making the Helpmate facility and grounds feel more like a safe and tranquil home.  When Hugh found out that Trane was encouraging their employees to provide more community service, he immediately thought of Helpmate and began rounding up others to bring his service project idea to life.  Many of the individuals who signed up for the workday also recruited their family members to help.

Leah McCurley, another Helpmate volunteer, generously offered to help coordinate and supervise the projects.  Leah provides volunteer chaplaincy services to Helpmate clients.  Outside of this volunteer role, she also provides a great deal of building and grounds assistance on a regular basis.  So it came as no surprise to the staff that she would be willing and eager to help with the service projects on May 22.

We want to show our appreciation for all of the volunteers who gave up four hours of their weekend to beautify our shelter grounds:

Angela, Donnie and Hannah Rash

Phyllis Poteete

Ruvim and Yelena Khavrunyak

Nick Polulak

Joyce Ramsey and Bob Burns

Aaron Neumeyer

Hugh and Cathy Alexander

Leah McCurley

We also want to thank the Riverside Stump Dump for donating three truckloads of mulch.  Many thanks to Leah for delivering each load to us.  All of the people who made this workday possible are helping us succeed in our mission of working with the community to eliminate abuse and fear!
