Volunteer Spotlight: Sabra Ball

Sabra Ball became involved with Helpmate in January 2009 when she began her Masters-level Internship for Western Carolina University’s Social Work Program.

As an Intern, she provided a great deal of assistance with hotline and court advocacy on a weekly basis.  From the beginning, it became apparent to the Helpmate staff that Sabra possesses a natural skill when it comes to advocacy work.  Her strong desire to help victims and their children was evident as she spoke to callers on the hotline and worked with survivors in the court system.  She provided a listening ear so that each client could tell their story, perhaps for the first time.  She gave them concrete information about community resources, legal options, and safety planning strategies.  She offered words of encouragement and empowerment to every client she worked with.  After she completed her Spring Internship with Helpmate and graduated from Western, she continued volunteering weekly on the hotline.  She has made it clear that helping victims of domestic violence is a priority for her and she has continued her role as a volunteer advocate to this very day.  Sabra has donated 643 hours of her time to assist Helpmate clients!  The guidance and support that Sabra and other volunteers provide to callers on the hotline is crucial to our mission of working with the community to eliminate abuse and fear.  All of us at Helpmate are grateful that Sabra is on our team!
